Shifting Ground: Peter Zumthor and the Urbanization of the Alps

Projects in the Swiss Alps such as the chapel of Sogn Benedetdg in Sumvitg (1987) and the Thermal Bath in Vals (1996) shaped the image of Peter Zumthor as a quasi-romanticist, anti-urban architect working in remote areas, far away from the hubs of modern life, in a seemingly untouched natural context. What if this image is wrong? Can an analysis of the economic context and the exploitation of the Alps in the late 20th century by the tourist and energy industry help to revise this image? Was Henri Lefebvre right with his prophecy of the “complete urbanization”? Philip Ursprung is Professor for Modern and Contemporary Art at the University of Zurich. The Patriot Game (part 1)

Documentary by Arthur MacCaig “This extraordinary and moving documentary reviews ten years of armed warfare by the IRA and places today’s headlines in their proper political and economic context. Through vivid footage of street battles and interviews with participants, THE PATRIOT GAME forcefully debunks the twin myths that the IRA is a ‘terrorist organization’ fighting ‘a religious war.’” – Kevin J. Kelley, The Guardian Rich in emotional images, often tender but more often terrifying, THE PATRIOT GAME tells the story of the long and bitter battle for Northern Ireland. The film’s introduction covers Ireland’s history from British colonization to the territory’s division in 1922. THE PATRIOT GAME then details the events of the decade that began in 1968. Through powerful portraits of rebellion and eyewitness accounts of killings and such massacres as the infamous “Bloody Sunday,” the film shows the IRA at work – much of it filmed clandestinely – as they argue their cause which, in this country and in most of the world, has gone unheard.

Things Do Not Compute

This video should help friends and family begin to think about our current political, social, and economic context. I ask a basic question, “How is our society functioning?” This question has many answers depending on your perspective. It is both a personal, worldwide, local question. The most important point is where are we heading; are we going towards a highly functional society or alternately to failure. What are some of the things we should look for. I follow on with a rebroadcast of the Jimmy video so new viewers can see it and absorb a common sense perspective.

Machwon’s Out of Context Strawman Arguments
